The Hastings Sustainability Showcase will educate, inform and inspire people and businesses about the latest ideas, products and trends in sustainability.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams announced $10,200 towards the event under the Back to the Track program which supports regional racing clubs to engage with their communities.
The March 1 and 2 event, organised by the Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network, is at the Port Macquarie Racecourse.
Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network spokesperson Dr Nigel Urwin said the funds would greatly assist in organisation, advertising, venue and equipment hire as well as increasing accessibility for local exhibitors and businesses.
He said Port Macquarie was very lucky to have such a large green space, pun intended, for the event.
“It [the racecourse] has indoor areas for seminars and workshops and plenty of space for exhibitors large and small,” Dr Urwin said.
“The event aims to “showcase” the racecourse too.”
Planning of the Hastings Sustainability Showcase is in full swing.
“We hope to show how regional and local government, not-for-profit organisations, businesses and individuals are contributing to sustainability,” Dr Urwin said.
Exhibitors will range from solar providers to microbreweries, food producers/ manufacturers, community gardens, waste management businesses and government research organisations involved in food production including aquaculture.
“We hope to secure Costa Georgiadis to be a keynote speaker,” Dr Urwin said.
He said the event would have workshops, demonstrations and a full seminar series on diverse topics such as making kombucha, and urban food gardens, to financial grants and government programs to assist with transition to improved sustainability for home and business or the benefits of buying and running electric vehicles.
“The event is aimed at generating a community-wide discussion about sustainability, how we improve our lives and the environment in which we live and pass the latter on to future generations,” Dr Urwin said.
Charles Sturt University is auspicing the event.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the government’s funding would support the Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network’s event which would bring together a broad cross section of stakeholders from government, utilities and business sectors focusing on a number of sustainability issues.
The Back to the Track program has approved funding to 25 projects in regional NSW.
