That'll all change on Sunday at Oxley Oval as the pair vie for selection in the Macquarie Coast Stingers side for the Regional Big Bash on December 4 and 5 in Ballina.
Over the next month more than 70 players across six teams - the Wasps, Fire Ants, Hornets, Scorpions, Huntsmans and Rays - will also aim for final selection.
When the Wasps and Fire Ants take to the field at 11.30am it will be the first time the Jones' brothers have played against each other in a competitive fixture.
Fittingly, the match will be a round one clash alongside the Scorpions and Rays at Wayne Richards Park.
"This will be a bit more of a serious contest than in the backyard I reckon," Zac said.

"It'll be a bit of rivalry. I've never played against my brother before, so I'm sure there'll be a bit of chit-chat out there, but I'm looking forward to it."
Younger brother Sam, however, laid down the challenge to his older sibling.
"Hopefully I can get him out because the talk won't stop when we get back home," he said.
"It's our first serious game not playing together, but it should be fun to get out there and see what he's got and how he goes."
It will be the first time Zac has taken on a leadership role with the Wasps in a shared captaincy with Port Macquarie Pirates' all-rounder Jared Humphreys.
"It'll be new to me but I'm sure with Jared by my side we'll try to do our best for our team," he said.
In previous years the Stingers have selected their side for the annual tournament based mainly on which players were available and it hasn't worked.
The Stingers record overall has been ordinary and they hope this year will be different.
"(The trials) have never been done before so it's fun for all captains to select these fellas to play in this competition and see how it really feels to play up another level," Zac said.
"It'll be interesting to see how it all goes; it'll be good for the Mid North Coast cricket community."
But neither brother will be focused on individual performances - they agree the key to a good performance overall is enjoyment.
It will be good to try my best, but I'm always going to try and put the team forward and get those wins which is important not only to us but people watching the game.

"I don't think you can be selfish," Zac said.
"It will be good to try my best, but I'm always going to try and put the team forward and get those wins which is important not only to us but people watching the game."
Sam said there won't be any disappointment if only one of them makes the final team.
"He's a good player so if he gets selected I'll be proud of him because he works hard at what he wants to do so hopefully we both do well," he said.
"I'll go out there and have fun ... that's why I play cricket."
