The skate park includes a bowl at the northern end, as well as an open bowl and flow section, a street section with stairs and rails, and a pump track.

It caters for everyone from beginners through to experienced skateboarders, scooters and bike riders.

The new recreation area at the lake's foreshore reserve also includes seating, shade, bins, water bubblers and landscaping.

The $613,000 project was made possible with $301,000 from a state government Stronger Country Communities Fund grant awarded to the Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club and $312,000 contributed by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

The Lake Cathie community has been pushing for a skate park for 20 years.

Lake Cathie Skate and Recreation Park president Mick Fullbrook said he was chuffed the skate park was open.

"Watching the kids skate is just amazing," he said.

"It is going to bring so many people to Lake Cathie."

He thanked the committees, council, Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams, Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club and Lake Cathie Skate and Recreation Park vice-president Monica Robinson.

The skate park officially opened on Monday (March 15).

Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the skate park was very much a community-driven project.

"There's been a lot of people involved over the years and it has been a concerted effort, a determined effort," she said.

Mrs Williams said not many projects were more deserved than the Lake Cathie skate park.

Mayor Peta Pinson described the official opening as a true community celebration.

"It [the skate park] is a place for everyone, really, and this is exactly what this foreshore is about," she said.

Cr Pinson said she was sure future generations of kids would be zooming around the skate park, enjoying themselves immensely.

Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club was successful in receiving the state government grant under the Stronger Country Communities Fund on behalf of the Lake Cathie Skate Park Committee.

Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club president Phil Smith said the club was very proud of the project.

Convic, a world leader in skate park and youth space design and construction, built the skate park.

A grand opening event from 10am to 2pm on Saturday (March 20) will feature a skate competition, sausage sizzle, jumping castle and face painting.
