At the completion of the next six weeks, MacKillop College leader of sport Erin Denham is hopeful that number can increase after the school obtained funding for a pilot program.
Jack Newton Junior Golf has funded this program as part of schools' initiative to grow and develop new players in the game.
The school's elective sport students will spend 10 weeks in total hitting golf balls around a variety of venues.
"Golf is a pretty specialised sport where a lot of students would never have stepped foot onto a golf course because it's not something their family or mates do," Ms Denham said.
"There's a belief that golf is a prestigious world that you could never take students to and I think that barrier is slowly being broken down here in Port Macquarie."
Ms Denham said the program was directed at year 10 students who traditionally started to disengage with sport.
"We try and give them different things to do and golf is a sport that is often inaccessible to a lot of students because they don't have clubs," she said.
"By having that funding, we put in place access for our students to start learning at school and then going out to the driving range and hydro golf to apply those skills."
After a false start a few years ago, Ms Denham said it was encouraging to see the program take off.
"The feedback is the kids are enjoying it and the golf course is offering sponsorships where they are targeting a few students from those sessions," she said.
"It's something different, something new and my hope would be with all of our sport programs that a student finds if they are liking the sport, they take it up in their own time."
