The upgrades to Port Macquarie's Coastal Walk are continuing, with the Charlie Uptin Walk to Flagstaff Hill (stage 2) and Doctors Walk works ready.
This will be followed by upgrades to the Kenny Walk section.
In addition to wider pathways and additional handrails, new boardwalks will be installed leading to the Flagstaff bridge and at the southern end of Oxley Beach, improved signage will be installed, and a new drinking fountain will rehydrate walkers and their four-legged friends.
Along the Kenny Walk, parts of the Nobbys Beach memorial track will receive attention, including upgrades to the retaining wall, new seating, a new section of boardwalk to improve access, as well as erosion protection and regeneration of the natural vegetation.
Stage one of the Charlie Uptin Walk to Flagstaff Hill upgrade was officially opened in December 2019.
The makeover delivered a wider concrete path, disability-compliant grades, upgraded stairs and seats, and a new viewing platform with sweeping coastal vistas.
Mayor Peta Pinson said the Coastal Walk Master Plan was developed with input from the community, and is aimed at improving the overall experience of the popular scenic walk.
"Our coastal walk is one of our most popular attractions, enjoyed by an estimated 500,000 people every year," Cr Pinson said.
"The upgrades will enable greater access for locals, visitors and those with a disability and will no doubt become even more popular for activities such as whale watching and losing yourself in the stunning views."
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said locals and visitors are enjoying the upgraded Coastal Walk as they explore the region's coastline.
"We all know the benefits of keeping fit and active while at the same time being aware of COVID-19 requirements and there is no better way to do that than enjoying the great outdoors," Mrs Williams said.
"It is tremendous to see these much needed improvements rolling out and I look forward to seeing the progress continue thanks to Council and the NSW Government working together to jointly fund this project."
During construction, sections of the path will be closed to ensure the safety of the community and work crews, with access changes clearly signposted.
Pedestrians will need to use Pacific Drive, and there will be no vehicle access to the Nobbys Beach carpark during construction, however pedestrians and dogs will still be able to access the beach on foot via Kenny Drive.
The upgrades are part of a $1.762 million project, with council contributing $997,000 under the Coastal Walk Master Plan, and the NSW Government contributing $765,000 under the Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund, established under Restart NSW.
Scheduled completion is mid-2020, although this timeline may be adjusted to keep in line with required state and federal guidelines throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
