This saw practising boats sliding backwards down river and sailors on the bank undecided whether to join them for racing.
By the time the seventh handicap race started, the south south-west breeze had freshened and continued to build throughout the afternoon.
The strong tide made for interesting tactical sailing.
The catamaran race was won on by Frank O'Rourke on Dino followed closely by Tony Kuhn on Stella.
Rob Barwick on Drift was next and then Dave Winter on Spica.
The monohulls race was won by Steve Bohlsen in Interceptor followed by Paul Roberston in Gift, Roger Shipton in Zazoo and Martina Holt in Spellbound.
Warren Sykes in Limited Edition and Andrew Richards in Impulsive followed and then Jane Cooper in Impetuous.
Stuart Symons and Therese Dawson in Elmo, Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Matt Dalcomb and Simon Gandy in Puffin rounded out the field.
Steve Couch in Lazybuoy had enough of the tide and turned to a spectator.
The juniors race was won by Alice McNee and Elsa Gandy in Sailfish followed by Bridget Taylor and Caitlin Hicks in Dorado.
Next Sunday is race five of the summer series starting at 2pm. Frank O'Rourke is rostered on duty.
