Weatherzone meteorologist Joel Pippard said as of Wednesday, February 26 the Port Macquarie airport station had recorded 421mm of rain.

The last time rainfall exceeded this amount in February was in 2009, where 581mm was tallied.

Mr Pippard said prior to the 2009 record, 1929 recorded the highest amount of rainfall in February.

The highest amount of rainfall for a 24 hour period was recorded up to 9am on Sunday, February 9, where 142mm was recorded.

Mr Pippard said the coastal trough brought a big weather system to the region and it lingered for a number of days.

There were 11 consecutive days of rainfall for the month.

February's temperatures, according to Mr Pippard were also the fifth warmest on record and sat just behind the record temperatures for February in 2017.

Mr Pippard said this year's February minimum temperatures were the hottest on record since 2003.

The average minimum temperature for February since records began is 18.4 degrees.

This month recorded an average minimum temperature of just under 20 degrees.

The long term average maximum temperature for the month of February has been recorded by Weatherzone as 27.6 degrees.

This month the average maximum temperature was recorded as 27.7 degrees.

Mr Pippard said clouds from a large amount of rainfall can trap heat and result in warmer temperatures.

Meanwhile January this year, Mr Pippard said was the second warmest on record.

The average minimum temperature for January in 2020 was 20.5 degrees, while the average maximum temperature was 30.2 degrees.

The long term average minimum temperature for January is 18.4 degrees and the maximum temperature is 27.7 degrees.

Mr Pippard said warm temperatures were consistent over a number of days in January.

He said the last three days in February could bring some more rain to the region, however it's not likely to be a huge amount.
