Rainfall is expected to increase along the northern New South Wales coast today (Thursday, February 6), as a low pressure trough deepens in the area.
This trough is expected to linger near the coast and in the longer-term gradually shift southwards during Friday and over the weekend, increasing rainfall along central and southern parts of the coast and the adjacent ranges. Intense rainfall is also possible for some areas with this system.
Minor flooding is predicted in the Hastings and Camden Haven rivers.
"We are not sure the exact amounts of rain but between 50-150mm," SES Port Macquarie deputy unit commander Katie Blake said.
Ms Blake said people need to do some general preparedness of their property.
"Clean your gutters and your downpipes, make sure they are clear so that water doesn't back up and into buildings," she said.
"Tie down loose items such as backyard furniture, trampolines and kids' toys so they don't get picked up by the wind.
"Trim back branches of trees and do some general maintenance."
Weatherzone meteorologist Joel Pippard said the real effects of the weather will be apparent on Friday.
"Today we have a coastal trough that is going to develop off the Brisbane coast," Mr Pippard said.
"That is going to start making its way down the coast particularly on Friday the real effects will starts to reach our region.
"Going into late Thursday and into Friday we could start to see some heavy rain developing over the Port Macquarie-Hastings region."
Mr Pippard is predicting falls anywhere between 70-100mm.
"More inland places might get a little less but still 50-70mm," he said.
The wet weather is expected to continue into the weekend.
"After Friday we will be left with an inland trough so you could get further falls of between 10-20mm a day over the weekend," he said.
"Sunday looks like that coastal trough could deepen and bring falls back up the coast....another 50-100mm on Sunday/Monday is not out of the question."
Mr Pippard warned that with the amount of rain predicted it is possible the region will experience flash flooding. He advised people to be cautious around rivers and flood waters.
