Hastings residents can get their wheels turning by attending a free community barbecue breakfast at Town Green from 7am to 9.30am on Thursday, September 16.
NSW Bike Week runs from Saturday, September 21 to Sunday, September 29.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council road safety officer Pip Cox said cycling is a healthy, easy, low cost and environmentally friendly form of transport.
"Jump on your bike this Thursday, September 16 and join us for a free barbecue at Town Green to celebrate NSW Bike Week," she said.
Bike Week is an initiative by the NSW Government aims to spread positive messages about the benefits of cycling to a diverse audience, increase use of cycling infrastructure for transport and educate the community about related road rules.
Port Macquarie cyclist Robert Marr said riding around town for transport is a great alternative to driving.
"This is my form of transport, I don't drive." he said.
"It's quite fun. I really enjoy going down and up hills, just getting around town."
Charles Sturt University is hosting free bike riding events for staff and students during the week, including giveaways such as free food, drinks, competitions and prizes.
The University is also hosting a social media photo competition open until Friday, September 27.
Staff and students can take part by posting photos on their bike rides to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #NSWBikeWeek and #CharlesSturtUni.
Port Macquarie Ride to Uni Day will begin from 6.30am on September 26 at the Port Macquarie campus. The event will feature a guided bike ride to Drury Lane where riders will receive a free breakfast and coffee.
