Construction has started to upgrade the Charlie Uptin Walk section from near Salty Crew Kiosk heading south towards Flagstaff Hill.

The project will include a wider path, replaced stairs to the beach, a new viewing platform and upgraded seating.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the state government have allocated funding for upgrades to the popular Coastal Walk.

Chris Harris from Salty Crew Kiosk said the Charlie Uptin Walk towards Flagstaff Hill upgrade would bring huge benefits to the community.

He said the wider footpath would create better access for everybody, particularly people with a disability, while the path would be safer for runners.

"It's such a great area down here for the community," Mr Harris said.

"I think it always needs to be kept at its best for the community."

Mr Harris said the project was really positive.

"It is a small price to pay for a little bit of an interruption at the moment," he said.

Mr Harris said the upgrade would be better for tourism as it beautified the whole area.

"People come to Port Macquarie for the whole area so I think it's important that we look at the whole area as one identity," he said.

The 9.2 kilometre Coastal Walk spans from Tacking Point Lighthouse to Westport Park.

Section one of the upgrade at Westport Park was completed in late 2018 and now stage two has started.

There are more improvements to come.

The council has allocated $997,000 for Coastal Walk upgrades with the state government contributing $765,000 in Restart NSW funding.
