The two swimmers were assisted from a rip at Town Beach rock wall on April 29, not even a full day after the patrol flags came down across NSW on Sunday until next season.

Surf Life Saving NSW preventative actions jumped significantly this year to 183,302 with 35 coastal drownings since July 1 last year.

The Mid North Coast recorded 69 rescues, 3251 preventative actions, 139 first aid actions and two coastal drowning deaths in the preliminary patrol statistics.

SLSNSW chief executive Steven Pearce said he is proud of each and every club in NSW for their efforts this season.

"The vigilance, bravery and commitment that our surf lifesavers have displayed this season has been second to none," he said.

"From the patrolling members through to our 24/7 Support Operations teams we have reduced coastal drowning deaths beating the ten year average.

"Our members have been at the forefront of major critical incidents and showed extraordinary skill and compassion.

"We can't stress enough the importance of taking responsibility of yourself when visiting the coast.

"Please stop and think before putting yourself, your friends and family and our first responders in danger."

"Although the red and yellow flags are not flying at this time, our Surf Life Saving Support Operations teams are ready to respond to incidents around the clock."
