Candidates contesting the seat of Port Macquarie are Peter Alley (Country Labor), Leslie Williams (The Nationals), Drusi Meggett (The Greens) and Jan Burgess (Sustainable Australia).
Mrs Williams has held the seat of Port Macquarie since 2011.
About 60,000 people are eligible to vote in the electorate.
Voters turned out early at Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus, then numbers dropped off for a while before the crowd picked up again.
Sausage sizzles are also a popular part of the election day ritual.
Lake Cathie Public School P & C members fired up the barbecue at Lake Cathie Community Centre.
Money raised will go to additional physical activity and sensory playground areas at the school.
Lake Cathie Public School P & C member Michelle McKenzie said the sausage sizzle was an ingrained part of election day.
"We saw it as a really amazing opportunity to reach out to the community," she said about the election day fundraiser.
Ms McKenzie said they had fantastic support from local businesses through either donations or discounts.
Meanwhile, voters at Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus are munching their way through sausage sandwiches and egg and bacon sandwiches courtesy of a fundraising sausage sizzle.
Stars of the Hastings Dance for Cancer participant Ian Ross is staging the fundraising barbecue with the help of students and staff.
Money raised goes to the Cancer Council.
Mr Ross said the Cancer Council was a fantastic organisation.
