Their junior boys 4x100-metre relay team again progressed beyond the regional titles after Jake Morgan anchored their gold medal performance.
Morgan gritted his teeth and pushed through the pain barrier after he suffered an ankle injury in his 200-metre win earlier in the day.
Coach Gavin Thompson admitted he wasn’t sure whether to include the youngster in their final line-up.
“I tossed up whether to send him back out there, but he said he would be fine so we strapped his ankle up and we won pretty easily,” Thompson said
“He pushed through the pain barrier to win and ran the final leg for us.”
Regional records on the track were broken by Trent Alley in the 800-metre and 60-metre hurdles while Chester Wade won the 1500-metre event and set a new record in the process.
Tahlia Lacey also helped the junior girls 4x100-metre relay team to a silver medal with a strong performance in the third leg.
“Tahlia was probably a bit disappointed in herself, but she did well in the relay and pulled through in one of the best legs I’ve ever seen,” Thompson said.
Jordan Thompson was also successful in the 100-metre and 200-metre events
“He beat a kid he had never beaten before and it just went to show that a bit of determination goes a long way,” Thompson said.
“I’ve never been a prouder dad.”
Michael Vandoros also set a new regional record in the discus.
“Year by year we’re improving and the overall sportsmanship, guts and determination on show from the kids who pulled through with injuries was great to see,” Thompson said.
Preparations will now continue for the state titles which will be held at Homebush on March 16-17.
