Hairdresser Karlie Tilston views putting her skills to use with the Community Hair Project as a way of giving back to the community. Miss Tilston will be among the hairdressers to volunteer their time to give free haircuts to people doing it tough when the Community Hair Project comes to the Port Macquarie Anglican Soup Kitchen. She responded to a call for local hairdressers to volunteer their time to help others. “It’s nice to give back to the community and it’s good for the soul to be able to make a difference in other people’s lives,” Miss Tilston said. She said haircuts made people feel good about themselves. “For someone that doesn’t have a lot, it [a haircut] can make them feel 10 times better about themselves and more confident,” Miss Tilston said. “Everyone says they always feel better after a haircut.” The Community Hair Project restores self-esteem one haircut at a time to people doing it tough. The initiative, which started 15 months ago, has hairdressers and barbers in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. The project is heading to Port Macquarie on November 21. Momentum is gathering ahead of the Community Hair Project’s arrival in Port Macquarie. Andrew Bourke and Breeanna Stone from Doppio or Nothing will provide coffees on the day and McGrath Port Macquarie estate agents will cook a barbecue lunch and serve icecreams.
