Marine Rescue Port Macquarie unit commander Greg Davies said if you can’t do it on the road then your probably can’t do it on the water.
“Did you know you can lose your boat licence for drinking and driving? More so, if you do then you automatically lose your car licence?” Mr Davies said.
“The same rules about giving way and common sense apply when you take a boat or jetski out especially in the river.
“We have speed limits everyone must follow when in the river especially near the marina and new the ferry.
“We also have no wash zones in the river that people need to pay attention to.”
Mr Davies said with the silly season very much here taking just a little extra time to ensure safety will go a long way to making sure everyone enjoys the holidays.
“Ensuring everyone wears a life jacket is important especially when you cross the bar and if you are heading out to sea all boats must be carrying flares, a V sheet and radio.
“Likewise if you are heading out on your boat please remember to log on with us via Chanel 16 or our Marine Rescue app because if you get into trouble it is a lot easier for us to help you if we know where you were going.”
He also said that if you haven’t used your boat in a while ensure a proper service before taking to the water.
“Most of our call outs are due to poor or no maintenance issues.
“If you haven’t been on your boat or jetski for a while make sure the vessel has new fuel and the radio is working along with the other safety features.
“You never know a little preparation might just save your life.”
