Bankbook Park is what Wollongong City Council hopes to call a new park in Wongawilli. But the council wants its residents to comment on the proposal as the park will be the central hub of the Vista Park estate in the West Dapto Land Release Area. A council spokesperson said the proposed park name is a tribute to the nearby Bankbook Hill, a miner’s settlement which was established for the working class of Wongawilli mine, opened in the 1920s. A local amateur historian has suggested that it was called Bankbook Hill due to all the miners making money at Wongawilli Colliery. Council is exhibiting the name proposal in accordance with its Naming of Community Facilities and Parks Policy. The easiest way to provide feedback on the proposed naming of Bankbook Park is to complete a feedback form available on Council’s website, customer service centre or Dapto Library. People can also provide feedback at Dapto Street Fair between 9.30am and 11.30am on Sunday, September 4. Feedback closes at 5pm on September 26. If the proposal receives the unanimous support and endorsement of Council, an application to name the park will progress to the Geographical Names Board that makes the final decision on the proposal.
