Halloween is almost here and if your kids are getting stuck for costume ideas, this year, why not turn the creep factor up to 11?
A spokesperson for Costume Wonderland said over time she had seen youngsters become increasingly drawn to extra scary costumes.
"Kids aren't really wanting gentle fairytale kinds of costumes anymore ... I feel like kids now these days are after just really, really scary looking things," she said.
"They're not really scared of gore and things like that anymore."
CostumeBox co-founder Nikki Yeaman said she was seeing a return to Halloween classics post-lockdown.
"Skeletons, vampires, witches and evil clowns are big this year," said.
"In terms of pop culture the squid game costumes have sold like hotcakes, Scream costumes and decor have been huge after the new [film]."
Here's our five creepy costume ideas for kids:
1: Evil clown
Clowns are creepy enough as it is, let alone an evil clown. Grab a curly wig and some face paint and you're all set. Bonus points for a (toy) bloodied knife or axe.
2: The Purge
This one is fairly easy, with the distinctive purge masks available for purchase in many stores - or you can make your own. Then add a dark hoodie and pants and voilà! The costume is complete.
3: Headless mad scientist
This one is a little more complex, but the pay off is worth it. And you can apply the effect to many different costumes. There's different ways to achieve the headless look, but most we've come across use a combination of cardboard, a backpack, coat hanger and a lot of tape.
4: Walking dead
Zombie-ifying is easy with some scissors and a red paint. Grab an old t-shirt and pants, cut to make it look a little tattered, and dab paint. Make it extra creepy with a knife headband!
5: Edward Scissorhands
A classic and distinctive costume, the key part of nailing Edward Scissorhands is... the hands. One method to recreate the iconic look is to use plastic picnic knives painted silver, stuck inside black fingerless gloves. From there it's a matter of the wig, white face paint, black clothes and lots of belts worn around the body.
