Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's Live+Local program responds directly to the need to increase participation in Australia's local live music scene, and provides a platform for delivering live music activity that is innovative, flexible and sustainable.
The program is being delivered in partnership with the Live Music Office, with curator Lisa Willows at the helm.
"After a couple of years with no gigs, Live+Local is helping to reignite the music scene in the Port Macquarie Local Government Area (LGA)," Ms Willows said.
"Having music acts on offer in places that wouldn't typically have live music is also encouraging locals to get more involved in the industry and support local artists.
"Establishments no longer require a DA to have live music in their venue so we have some really interesting gigs in different places."
These include Port Macquarie's Lifeline shop and local cafes.
"I have been working on matching the artists to a venue that will suit their style of music
"The first few events that we have held have been well attended and have run smoothly," Ms Willows said.
A project working group, consisting of musicians, promoters, venue owners, and booking agents was established in May last year to organise the project.
"Mella Miante is part of the working group and has been fantastic in helping organise the events," Ms Willows said.
Over 60 local artists are involved in the event, with a focus on up and coming performers.
"There are five bands involved that will be performing their first gig as part of the program," Ms Willows said.
"We want to help keep musicians employed while supporting young artists in the industry."
Due to the introduction of new COVID restrictions on Friday, January 7, some events have been compromised.
"We did have a gig planned for Sienna Grange Aged Care, but because of the restrictions we might have to cancel that one.
"We're going to push ahead with the events and run them in a COVID-safe way to ensure everyone is safe."
Featuring an all local artists lineup, the Micro Festivals are about providing free performances in local businesses throughout January.
