The 68-year-old West Haven resident was originally based in Sydney and worked in corporate strategy for more than 20 years before joining the Men's Shed in 2017.
"I've been with the shed for about five years now and am also the secretary. Originally I joined because my neighbour John told me about it and it seemed to be a really good community operation," he said.
"I'm retired now but I worked in corporate strategy and general business. Joining the group I had no trade experience but at the men's shed you will find people with and without trade skills.
"I enjoy the comradeship and people can be here if they want to be here. Everyone is different.
"I have my own home workshop and at home you are doing little jobs. At the men's shed you can tackle bigger projects and work as a team, you're learning from each other all the time.
"Normally the Christmas period is very busy and a bit chaotic. We are building chairs and doubles.
"Some of my favourite projects are building tables and an aeroplane for the iKew Centre. Any project where we are giving back to the community feels great."
The volunteer group operates from Kendall Showground each Tuesday from 9am and Thursday from 9am.
The group is celebrating the end of the year with a garage sale in the lead up to Christmas from 8am to 1pm on Saturday, December 18. Various tools including electric tools and crafted wood items will be offered for sale on the day.
"We feel quite free here and there is no pressure on anyone. Some lads just sit and drink tea all day while having a chat," Mr Ainslie said.
"If anyone was thinking about attending I'd encourage them to come along and join in."
