Boat sweep Steve Monaghan said the Kockatoos cemented first place across the first two rounds of the North Coast Surf Boat Series at Woolgoolga on November 20 and 21.

With club stalwart George Fowler watching on from the sand, the Kockatoos were right on the pace across the 10 races.

It followed their second-place finish at Freshwater Beach on November 13 when the season unofficially started.

"The highlight of the weekend was George Fowler up there camping and one of our boats is named after him and he is our number one supporter," Monaghan said.

"We wanted to perform in front of him that's for sure. The boys were amongst the pack and if not leading every race. They had good boat speed."

Monaghan admitted he didn't know what to expect before the race, but the crew performed.

"If we put some good training together and have no injuries we'll be right up there this season," Monaghan said.

"The first year was a learning curve, but they were on the pace and a lot of crews were looking over their shoulders.

"They were as fast as anyone last year, we just had a bit of bad luck and probably should have made the Aussie final."

The club's reserve men and under-23 women's crews also started their NCSBS seasons with varying results.

"It was the girls' first hit out and they were very nervous, but they beat the other under-23 girls crew and hovered around third and fourth in the open women," Monaghan said.

"It's those little mistakes which set us back; someone would get a crab and we'd lose ground. It was a good learning experience for them.

"The reserve men went so well and got better and better through the day. They were so keen to compete and willing to learn things and try things which was getting them results."

Attention now turns to this weekend's Rainbow Gold Enduro race at Rainbow Beach before the surf boat series continues at Tea Gardens on December 4 and 5.

"We've also got a state selection carnival at North Cronulla on December 18. If you go well in that, you get to represent NSW at the ASRL Open at the end of February."
