The move to increase crisis support hours at the centre in Port Macquarie has been made possible by funding provided by the federal government to help manage the impacts of COVID on mental health.

An added shift from 2.30am to 6am means the phones are now manned 24/7.

Trainer and manager of crisis support at Lifeline Mid Coast Di Bannister said staff have reported a high number of calls being received during that time slot.

"All staff have said that it's quite busy during this time. It's usually when people feel the most isolated," she said.

"In the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep can be the most difficult time for people who are struggling."

The Lifeline Mid Coast call centre receives calls for help from across the country.

"We are recognising that a high number of calls are coming from areas where there have been extended lockdowns," Ms Bannister said.

The Port Macquarie crisis support call centre has two phones that are manned by 85 volunteers on rotating shifts.

Ms Bannister said the centre hasn't been able to employ any new staff or take on more volunteers due to the recent month-long lockdown.

"Because it is such a unique position, face--to-face interviews are needed to make sure the person is the right fit for a crisis support worker," she said.

"For now, volunteers and staff have increased their hours at the centre and we hope to get some more people on board when we can.

"Our crisis support workers are very committed and dedicated and they work to ensure the phones get answered as quickly as possible."

Ms Bannister said lockdown can be a challenging time for people and encourages those who are struggling to reach out.

"Calling Lifeline doesn't have to be when you're in a dire situation. We support people when things are getting hard and speaking with someone earlier can mean all the difference later on," she said.

"Call numbers are escalating each week and we really do put our hearts and souls into the work that we do."
