Port Macquarie's most central play space on Town Green is about to be upgraded and council is seeking feedback on updated concept designs.
The playground revamp is a part of the major upgrade to Town Green West which is a $2.13 million project, with $633,500 provided by the Town Centre Masterplan Committee (through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD) and $1.5 million provided by the Australian government through a Community Development Grant.
Lucilla Marshall, council's group manager of recreation, property and buildings said feedback to date suggests the community is excited to see the end result.
"After listening to our community's thoughts, the design has been amended to better align with wants and needs for the space," Ms Marshall said.
"This includes more attention to a better variety of play equipment, more gathering spaces and amenities, more accessible play equipment, better visibility for both parents supervising their children and the adjoining businesses, and a stronger incorporation of the key natural elements in the area.
"This is a high traffic zone in our region, designed especially for connectivity and activity.
"We want to build upon this and make sure the playground is a place that our community enjoy. We're pleased that so many had their say, because it helps us tailor the playground to become a well-loved attraction for our own community, as well as any visitors in our region."
Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said he was looking forward to seeing the next stage of the project come to fruition.
"This great project was one of my election promises and it is rewarding to see what our government's $1.5 million investment has been able to deliver for our community so far, as well as the plans for the completion of the playground area on display currently," Mr Conaghan said.
The updated concept plan is currently open for community feedback.
As part of the heritage assessment of the site, construction and design measures have been put in place to mitigate potential impacts to areas of cultural significance. This means, tall structures and water play areas will not be able to be incorporated into the new playground.
The fig tree located at Town Green is a much-loved aspect of the area and is considered part of the play space. It will not be removed.
