Mark Stewart (12 August, Port News) and others opposing the poll on fluoridation, seem determined to conceal the facts with their own ignorance of basic chemistry and the science.

'Fluoride' is a schedule 7 poison, added to drinking water as hydrofluorosilicic acid - an industrial waste product - complete with contaminating heavy metals and arsenic, and cannot be avoided once added to the water. That is an incontrovertible fact.
It is nothing like chlorine, which is added to treat water, not people, readily gasses off and need not be consumed.
It is nothing like folate, which is a nutrient, and to compare it with seat belts is purely laughable.
Many large-scale studies now show no difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.
There are also more than 2,000 studies showing this hazardous chemical, even in small doses, harms the brain, bones, joints, pineal and thyroid glands, kidneys and even the teeth, and especially damages the developing brain of the fetus, infant and child.
If there's been no fluoride added to the local water supply for 18 months, people should applaud the saving to their health.
As to finances, fluoridation costs the council about $280,000 annually, so $90,000 for a poll to ask people if they want to stop pointlessly adding poison to the drinking water seems a very worthwhile investment.
Mark and other public health 'experts' should catch up with the science and accept the need for change.
