Marine Rescue Port Macquarie volunteers help repair Kendall family's house following March 2021 flood

Volunteers put up their hands for the renovation rescue after the ABC and recovery charity GIVIT launched a flood appeal seeking tradespeople who could help with repair work following the floods.

"The community always supports us and we try to give back however we can," Marine Rescue Port Macquarie unit commander Greg Davies said.

During the floods, the Ward family - Amy, Gregory and their son Midas - who live in Kendall, had their house inundated with flood water and severely damaged.

Amy has Muscular Dystrophy, which causes her joints to lock and she suffers from a number of other side effects of the condition that make her life difficult.

Gregory has lost 15 kilograms due to the stress of the family's current circumstances.

As well as dealing with the stress of not being able to live in their home, the Wards have recently found out their insurance claim has been knocked back.

Amy and Gregory are now living in a caravan where the colder weather is exacerbating Amy's illness. Their son is living at his grandmother's house, splitting the family.

Donations to help the Ward family have been secured through GIVIT and other donors including Bunnings, which is providing paint, plasterboard and tools for the renovation.

With the materials now sourced to repair the house, volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Macquarie are ready to roll up their sleeves to get to work to safely and professionally get the Wards' home back in shape.

Around 20 volunteers armed with tools started the repair work and renovations on Monday, July 5.

"Everyone got out there and are doing their best to help the family," Mr Davies said.

"I'm really proud of our volunteers who are giving up their time."

The list of tasks is long - removing parts of the home that have been damaged, plasterboarding, painting and a host of other jobs, with volunteers committed to working eight hour days to get the job done.

The goal is to have the renovation rescue finished by the end of this week.

"There are a lot of other families waiting for the same thing, so we might try and do one house a month if we can dedicate the time to it," Mr Davies said.
