The family, who wish to remain anonymous, have become homeless after they purchased a home near Laurieton earlier this year just before the March floods washed through the region.
The couple and their son, who has a disability, are floundering on a bare $112-a-fortnight carer allowance.
The mother said the family is not entitled to payments because they purchased their home with compensation from her husband's back injury.
"We are pretty much homeless; someone has given us a room to stay in but we cannot move back into our home in North Haven because it's condemned," she said.
"I didn't apply for a lot of grants and things, I felt guilty because so many people have been hit hard by the floods.
"We have never asked for help before, we have done a lot of volunteer work and it's hard to be on the other side.
"I want to go back to work and help people, but it's hard because obviously we do need a lot of help."
She said she approached North Haven charity, Aussie Battlers for help when she realised the family couldn't afford shoes.
Aussie Battlers has started a GoFundMe page for the family and has so far raised $150 of the $20,000 goal.
Aussie Battlers treasurer Janette Atkinson said this family in particular needs a lot of help from the community.
"They have no money to fix their home and haven't received enough money in grants to fix it. We at Aussie Battlers want to help as much as possible," she said.
"The sooner they can get back into their home, the sooner the wife can go back to work and receive an income for the family.
"We are prepared to do the work for this family but we need money to buy materials to purchase flooring, a kitchen and bathroom, furniture etc. Please help if you can. Any small donation is greatly appreciated. We don't want to see this family lose their home because of this awful tragedy."
