In broad daylight and without a care, a chicken thief was spotted quickly absconding from the preschool grounds with the kids' beloved cluckers Henny and Penny under his arms.
Port Macquarie Community Preschool centre director Megan Jones launched a search which proved unsuccessful and then turned to community social media pages for assistance.
A post on the Port Macquarie Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Facebook page resulted in 3500 views and numerous generous offers from residents offering to replace Henny and Penny.
Hen heroes, the team at Oxley Rural Supplies, wrote the happy ending to this story delivering two new chickens for the preschool's yard.
"Thank you to Oxley Rural Supplies who donated two more chickens, who are now called Emma and Pip to our preschool," Ms Jones said.
"This has been a valuable learning experience for the children. They have been so upset about the chickens' disappearance and learnt life lessons about property ownership and now also about the generosity of the Port Macquarie community."
