Port Macquarie Cycle Club president Stuart Jakeman hopeful the addition would lead to an increase in younger riders taking up the sport.
"This year we're running the under-11s on the road with some shadow riders which gives them a bit more confidence being out in real road racing conditions," he said.
"As you progress up in age groups those under-11s will be under-13s next year and all be racing on the road so that's a new addition for our Junior Tour this year."
The event started on Saturday (May 29) with team time trials taking place before the road race takes place on Sunday.
Port Macquarie was only represented by two riders - Stuart's son Oscar along with James Cockshutt.
Mr Jakeman admitted in previous years the club had seen more riders competing and they were now looking at building up some of the younger age groups.
"With a little bit of publicity other people might think about sending their kids out to race," he said.
"Even if they start young we've got somewhere they can race off the road and then moving along we always have people like myself and other club members who are coaches that help the kids tick boxes and progress through to be out on the road."
All races this weekend are for state selection points.
"This year the time trial carries some state selection points as well because the older kids are looking to send a team time trial team to the nationals," Mr Jakeman said.
"But the road race is where the kids score the bulk of their selection points."
