A water main was accidentally hit on a construction site on the corner of William and Lord Street around 3pm dumping thousands of litres of water on to the street and passing cars.
Water was cut affecting residents and businesses in the vicinity of Gordon St, Lord St and William St.
"Council staff attended a water main break on the corner of William and Church street," Terry Randall, group manager of Infrastructure Operations said.
"Water supply was isolated at around 4pm to allow repairs to be completed. The damaged components were removed and replaced, the system was flushed, and water supply was restored by 6pm.
"Further restoration works are occurring today (May 26), with street sweepers cleaning the roads, and garden works being carried out. Residents may possibly still experience discoloured water over the day.
"If you find that your water is not running clear, let your tap run for several minutes. If the water doesn't improve, call our customer service team on 6581 8111 for assistance."
