Funds raised by Port Macquarie's dedicated RSPCA volunteers will remain local following the closure of the local RSPCA animal shelter in April.

The funds collected by the RSPCA Op Shop will continue to ensure programs, such as the desexing program, will help local animals in need.
"The funds raised through the Op Shop will remain local and the food collections will still go to animals in the Port Macquarie-Hastings," RSPCA Port Macquarie President Jackianne Wright said.
"Nothing has changed with how funds are distributed in the area. Our desexing programs will still be funded locally."
Since the the RSPCA shelter was closed on April 26, council has worked with RSPCA Port Macquarie, along with other animal welfare groups, including Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Society, to re-home animals.
Council's group manager of environment and regulatory services, Debbie Archer, said because the number of animals in the Port Macquarie Animal Shelter fluctuates each month, it's too early to tell if the closure of the RSPCA Shelter has had an impact on the number of animals surrendered to the council facility.
"The Coffs Harbour RSPCA Shelter is still operating and we have been working with them to re-home and care for animals from here," she said.
"Local rescue groups are also working with us to re-home animals that we can't put through our adoption process.
"Council are working to re-home as many animals as possible and our euthanasia rates are very low at the moment."
The closure of the RSPCA Shelter in April came as a shock to local RSPCA volunteers.
"We're lucky that council has been able to take up the adoption of animals, but we are finding it hard to find places to house our cats," Jackianne said.
"It would be great if we had more people in the community who wanted to become foster carers for animals," Jackianne said.
The RSPCA is also planning to run pop-up adoption campaigns, education programs, provide foster care network support, and community outreach days in the upcoming months.
"We're lucky that our volunteers in our branch are very proactive," Jackianne said.
