Mermaid Presentations
All members of the Port Macquarie Mermaids who attended the presentation night on Saturday 8 May, agreed that it was a pleasant and memorable occasion for all concerned.
Peter Rowlands capably assisted proceedings on the microphone.
Wendy Rowlands was awarded Champion of Champions and Highest Yearly Point Score; Mermaid of the Year was awarded to Sally Jenner and the Encouragement Award went to Robyn Hodge.
Following the official presentations a party was held and games were played.
Japanese Visitors
Miss Sayoko Kamimura from Yokohama and Miss Ritsuko Takeuchi from Tokyo are at present the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Tod Roods in Port Macquarie. The girls both speak of Port Macquarie as a town of bright colours and happy people. They say that in Japan, clothes and buildings are comparatively dull in colour and style. Sayoko and Ritsuko arrived in Australia on 5 May.
During their stay in Australia they hope to see parts of the country from Cairns to Melbourne. Both are kindergarten teachers.
Last Thursday they went to Port Macquarie High School and had discussions with the pupils and teachers. In the afternoon they visited Marbuk Park and went horse riding.
Sayoko was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Roods three years ago on her first visit to Australia.
Cemetery Award
Port Macquarie Municipal Council has again won an award for the best park over two acres on the North Coast of New South Wales.
Council won the 'Herald' award for its garden in the Historic Cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street.
In addition to this honour, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Roberts, of 10 Chalmers Street, Port Macquarie, have won the award for the best home garden on the North Coast in the 'restricted town garden' section of the 'Herald' awards.
Carnival Queen Weds
When Mr. and Mrs. Graham Fayle were married in St. Agnes' Catholic Church on Saturday,
May 15, they received congratulatory telegrams from Canada, England and Amsterdam. The bride, formerly Maureen Fitzpatrick is a past Carnival of the Pines Queen.
The bride's gown was in the style of a Princess line of Thai silk, trimmed with guipure lace and featured a small train. The waist-length veil fell from a lace covered band. Her outfit was set off with a bouquet of three white roses.
Wauchope Toppled
In the greatest upset of the season the young Port Macquarie League team defeated competition favourites, Wauchope, 16-14, at West Port Park yesterday.
With a lead of 16-4 as a result of four great tries the maroons were in the box seat at half time and it was only in the final ten minutes with the game virtually in the bag that the former impregnable defence faltered to allow Wauchope to cross for two tries.
One of these was converted after the bell. Even Port Macquarie's most ardent supporters could hardly have expected the side which during the week had come in for so much criticism to be capable of holding the much vaunted timber town side, much less dealing out a thorough and decisive beating.
By scoring four tries to two, Port dished out a football lesson.
