Basketball in Port Macquarie has been affected by bushfire smoke, COVID19 restrictions and most recently postponements due to floods.
Boys and girls under-12 and under-14 teams from across the region including Byron Bay, Taree and Tamworth finally got to take to the court in the first round of their 2021 representative season.
All six courts of the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium were in use but modifications to make the event COVID-safe meant the round only involved the two age groups, with restricted spectator numbers and designated entry and exit points.
Port Macquarie Basketball Association secretary, Lyndal Harper said the event had been well received.
"For most of the under-12 players this was their first taste of representative basketball and after the round was postponed in March due to the floods, they were thrilled to finally be able to take the court.
"We have some of the best basketball facilities in country NSW here in Port Macquarie and with a great team of volunteers, COVID marshals and technical officials we've delivered a very successful event."
The Port Macquarie Dolphins fielded teams in the boys' under-12s and 14's and a girls under-14s.
"These players first trilled for a representative spot back in November last year, so it was great to see them have the chance to put their training efforts to the test," Harper said.
"Tamworth have fielded two teams in both age groups and were really strong which has given everyone something to work on for the second-round next month in Ballina."
