Giustina Katerina Lawlor, 53, died when a disassembled gun discharged, hitting her in the chest on May 8 at the family's north Brisbane home.

Her son Christian Dino Lawlor, 22, remains in custody and his second bid to be released on bail in time to attend her funeral stalled on Wednesday over concerns about his mental state.

Lawyers for the part-time factory worker made the application in the Brisbane Supreme Court - less than a week after his initial bid for release was refused when a magistrates court was told the prosecution case was that he had wilfully shot the gun.

However, Justice Soraya Ryan adjourned the application until a mental health assessment is carried out and a treatment plan in place.

The court was told Lawlor, who is also facing drug and ammunition charges, had convinced his father to give him the weapon weeks before the incident.

On the day before the shooting, Lawlor discharged the rifle with police seizing footage of him firing the weapon in a public park.

Lawlor claims to have cleaned the weapon, leaving it in pieces in the garage with a live round chambered in the firing mechanism.

The weapon was moved into the laundry, where the weapon accidentally discharging, striking Ms Lawlor on May 8.

Several family members were at the home when they heard the shot and heard her cry out before finding her body on the laundry floor.

"This is a truly tragic case," barrister James Godbolt said.

"It was disassembled, but a live round was left in the chamber, and it was clearly capable of firing.

"All you needed, I suppose, was the relevant firing mechanism."

The prosecutor made a strong objection to Lawlor's potential release, saying he was a danger to the community as new details emerged of Lawlor's drug-fuelled paranoia.

"What concerns me is the evidence of his behaviour," Justice Ryan said.

Almost two weeks before, his father had tried to hide the weapon from his son, who was "obsessed with the gun" and feared drones were following him.

"He (Lawlor) and his mum have gone outside to look for drones and that's when his father hides the gun under the couch and the bullets in the safe," Justice Ryan said.

"Then the father then hides from him - which conveys a lot about his mental state. When the applicant finds that his father has hidden the gun, he threatens to bash him."

The court was told his father fled the family home, calling his wife, who told him Lawlor was "going off his brain".

"She just wants to give him the gun, but the father is so scared, he does not go home that night."

The bail application was adjourned.

"I don't consider that I have enough information about the applicant's mental health to make a decision," the judge said.

"On the material before me, he has a dangerously unstable mental state."

Lawlor remains in custody for a committal mention on June 21.
