Information from geotechnical assessments will help decide the next steps.

There have been multiple embankment slips along the Coastal Walk zone and two sections are closed.

They are the stretch from Oxley Beach to Windmill Hill and an area at the Nobbys Beach car park.

The Coastal Walk can still be enjoyed outside of these sections.

The nine kilometre scenic walking trail spans from Westport Park to Tacking Point Lighthouse.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council acting group manager of recreation, properties and building Craig Luff said geotechnical assessments were underway to assess the extent of the damage and this information would help in deciding the best approach to remediation.

"We don't have a clear idea yet of how long it will take to get the Coastal Walk back to pre-storm condition," he said.

"Council is assessing dozens of major infrastructure projects, along with the impact of flood and storm water on our parks and recreational spaces, as well as roads.

"Our focus is on those major impacts which affect people's lives, such as restoring access to essential services and homes in our outlying areas."

Mr Luff said while the visual impact of the flood clean-up was reducing, for many people in our community life had changed significantly.

"Council's focus is on supporting people to safely get home and rebuilding our community," he said.

"We are working to make safe as many recreational areas as we can and prioritising the major work needed in many of our towns."

The council expects it will take a significant amount of time and resources to return to pre-flood life.
