February Rain
Heavy rains were generally received over the entire district during February and this rainfall, coupled with the heavy rainfall recorded during January and December has made the summer season one of the wettest on record, says the District Agronomist, Mr. K. R. Nagle.
Rainfall registrations for the month varied from 745 at Laurieton to 1743 at Yarras. The heavy rains received during the month caused some nuisance flooding along the Macleay and Hastings Rivers.
Rainfall figures for the month were: Yarras, 1743 points on 22 days; Comboyne, 1301 points on 22 days; Rollands Plains, 1686 points on 17 days; Wauchope 818 points on 19 days; Bellbrook, 1087 points on 19 days; Kempsey, 1085 points on 17 days; Laurieton, 745 points on 18 days. Port Macquarie had seven inches in February, 20 wet days.
Lions Dinner
Lions District Governor Stuart Willis, of Taree, paid an official visit to Port Macquarie club on Saturday evening last and one of his duties was to induct Mr. David Finlay to Lions membership. Held at the golf club, and with Lions ladies present, the evening was a pleasant one.
District Governor Willis was elected to office a convention in Port Macquarie in October 1969, and took office in July last year. He had been a frequent visitor here in Lions and golfing circles for many years and is well known throughout the district.
Swimming Club
Last Tuesday night saw eight new club records set in backstroke and medley events. New records holders are: Amanda Banes - Under 15 and under 16 years, 100 metre back stroke and Under 16 and Open 200 metre medley; Kaye Radley - Under 11 years, 100m back stroke; and Alan Witchard - Under 13 years, 100 metre back stroke, and Under 14 years and Open, 200 metre medley.
Surf Rescue Board
A surfboard which has been purchased by Port Macquarie Municipal Council through Derek Crisp for $120 will support 15 people. The board which is 11 feet 6 inches long was purchased for use as a rescue ski.
The board has been designed for speed and will get through heavy, broken surf easily. The board is 4 inches thick, which gives it plenty of buoyancy to support a heavy load. The board was delivered to council last week; it will add considerably to the safety patrol sponsored by the municipal council at Flynn's Beach.
Pike Heads Golf Club Again
Mr. J. G. (Jack) Pike was re-elected unopposed as president of the Port Macquarie Golf Club at a well-attended annual general meeting last Tuesday night.
It is his second year as president; he has been a member ever since the club moved to Tacking Point in 1953 and a committeeman for most of that time. Sixty members present at the meeting heard with regret that Mr. Jack Andrews, after a capable and efficient year as treasurer was not seeking re-election; however, the election of Mr. Phil Berthold to succeed him augurs well for the club.
Tributes were paid to Mr. Andrews for his work as treasurer; to Mr. Keith Campbell (the retiring handicapper) and Mr. Jack Lewin, who did not seek re-election to the committee.
