The intersection upgrade is set to start on February 22.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council says the intersection upgrade has been designed to improve the safety of both vehicles moving through the intersection and pedestrians crossing.

The upgrade will include new pavement, new kerbs, new sections of footpath, new medians, new roundabout, new stormwater pit and pipes, new water main crossings, new line marking and signs.

There will be slower speeds through the intersection and formal crossing points for pedestrians.

The intersection will be closed to traffic during the work.

Nearby resident Ruth Goodwin believes the roundabout will be beneficial.

She said the roundabout would probably be beneficial in slowing down some of the through traffic.

"It can be a bit of a race track here at certain times of the day," Ms Goodwin said.

She said there had been quite a few big accidents over the years.

Ms Goodwin said the temporary intersection closure during the construction would be a minor inconvenience for a long-term gain.

Ken Wong from the Owen Street Store said about the roundabout project: "If it really helps to improve the safety, and if there is no other way, it is OK."

Nearby resident Wayne Brown remains unconvinced about the need for a roundabout.

"To me, it's not a significant intersection," he said.

"There is always some level of traffic but it's certainly not a major road."

Mr Brown would prefer a roundabout at the intersection of Owen, William and Stewart streets.

The council received a $440,000 grant under Transport for NSW's Safer Roads Program for the intersection upgrade.

The council anticipates it will take three to four months to complete the Owen/Home streets intersection upgrade, weather permitting.
