Large amounts of sand routinely collects in the unit's rescue boat launching area with no solution in sight, according to former unit commander Ken Rutledge.

"The tide hits the boat ramp next to the base and the vortex water brings it round and directly into the Marine Rescue shed," Mr Rutledge said.

"While it is a good boat ramp, since it was put in the sand build up has been astronomical.

"When there is a big tide the sand is brought right into the launching ramps for rescue boats. It can take volunteers five to ten minutes to scrape the launch area, this could be time delayed in the event of a rescue.

"Normal days with a big tide the sand comes right into the base and our blocks have to shovel sand out just to get the boats out. That can be the difference between life and death of someone out there treading water

"We have spoken to Council on several occasions but their argument is that they cannot do anything extra until they are funded for it and it's not currently on their agenda."

Marine Rescue Camden Haven unit commander Neville Adams said the unit has plans for an upgrade of the launching area and the facility.

"The sand collecting has become quite an issue but we believe a floating wharf would solve the problem," he said.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council group manager recreation property and buildings, Liam Bulley said staff are liaising directly with Marine Rescue and being proactive in their approach to manage the current situation.

"Our teams are in regular and direct contact with the Camden Haven Marine Rescue in regards to the ongoing issue of sand build-up over their boat ramp," Mr Bulley said.

"We are proactively maintaining the build-ups as they occur, or as we are notified.

"Further to this, we are conducting investigations into the best possible long-term solution to mitigate the sand build-up In the future."
