Resident Keith Raicevich calls for flyover at Pacific Highway and Houston Mitchell Drive intersection

The Houston Mitchell Drive and Pacific Highway intersection has been the scene of crashes and near misses.

Keith Raicevich, who lives at Sapling Creek about one kilometre south of the intersection, has seen traffic increase over the years on the highway and Houston Mitchell Drive.

"A lot of cars are going south [from Houston Mitchell Drive], I've noticed, and they don't stop," he said.

"They are too impatient. The stop sign is there for a reason."

Transport for NSW is conducing a speed zone review of the Pacific Highway as a step to ensure the speed is safe in the vicinity of Houston Mitchell Drive.

Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams previously confirmed following ongoing discussions with Transport for NSW, an investigation to explore other improvements, such as warning signs and intersection changes to improve safety at the intersection, would continue.

Mr Raicevich believes a speed limit reduction is not the answer.

He said a flyover was needed at the intersection now.

"A flyover is the only proper fix for the situation," Mr Raicevich said.

"The way the traffic is going, I reckon it [the flyover] should have been here yesterday."

Mr Raicevich said he had also seen a lot of cars and trucks make U-turns at Aintree Close south of the Houston Mitchell Drive intersection.

Another accident at the Houston Mitchell Drive/Pacific Highway intersection on September 11 prompted renewed calls for action.

Mayor Peta Pinson raised the road safety issue at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's September meeting.

The council subsequently wrote to Mrs Williams to seek urgent representation to Roads and Transport Minister Andrew Constance and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole, requesting immediate road safety improvements and an eventual flyover intersection upgrade.

A spokesperson for Mrs Williams said the Port Macquarie MP had already arranged to meet with Mr Toole about a number of road-related issues including the Oxley Highway and Houston Mitchell Drive.

Mrs Williams met with Mr Toole on Wednesday (October 21) and presented the minister with a copy of the council's letter.

Meanwhile, Bonny Hills resident Peter Rodgers wants the highway speed limit reduced between Houston Mitchell Drive and the doughnut as an immediate short-term measure.

He said ultimately, only an overpass would eliminate the danger.
