Tacking Point Lighthouse, Town Green and the Glasshouse will all go red this month joining buildings and monuments internationally.
In celebration of Dyslexia Awareness Month schools can host a Red Day and receive a free one hour professional development session on Understanding Learning Difficulties and a Dyslexia Awareness pack.
"This year is significant to our advocacy efforts. We've campaigned for the year one phonics check since 2017 and it's great to see over 500 New South Wales schools are trialling the phonics check this year," Kelly King, Dyslexia Mid North Coast, said.
New South Wales and Tasmania announced trials of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in 2020. South Australia has already adopted the phonics check in all schools.
Another exciting development is the Primary Reading Pledge. Dyslexia Support Mid North Coast supports the national campaign to reduce the number of children who finish primary school unable to read proficiently.
Five From Five, AUSPELD and Learning Difficulties Australia have collaborated on an evidence-based framework to support schools and teachers with training and resources to ensure all students learn to read. Schools can download the Primary Reading Pledge Plan online.
Dyslexia Mid North Coast was founded in 2016 by two parents seeking support for their children. The group has grown to a committee of local speech pathologists, parents, teachers and tutors with over 300 members.
"Our group offers information and support for families navigating their child's learning difficulties. Not all children will have dyslexia but the interventions for children with dyslexia and children struggling to read are the same," Ms King said.
