Lake Cathie Tennis Club is putting plans into motion for a free-of-charge practice court

The club is delivering the submission to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in a bid to help fund the cost of building a new practice court on Kalang Street in Lake Cathie.

The entire project is expected to cost around $10,000 and be completed in January 2021.

Club representative Lee Sanders said the new facility will be free of charge to all community members and around 115 club members to practice a hit of tennis any time of the day.

"The idea is that people can come along without paying to play on the court, hit against the wall and have a practice," he said.

"It would be open to the public, kids, adults, people in wheelchairs and anyone could use it. This type of court isn't common and there is a fair demand for it to be used daily.

"A lot of people come up on holidays and their kids would be able to use it. There's a council grant and a Tennis Australia grant we are applying for.

"It will be on the north side of the club house, facing Kalang Street and we have had good feedback from the surrounding residents."

The Lake Cathie Tennis Club completed resurfacing of two synthetic tennis courts in 2016, at a cost of around $55,000.

The club has previously taken part in a nationwide 'Get Your Racquet On' campaign earlier this year to encourage people who used to play tennis or want to take up the sport, to have a go.
