Snow fell at Nowendoc, Yarrowitch, Walcha and heavily in Armidale as snow chasers hit the road for the long drive south or west over the hill from Port Macquarie for a wintry weekend.
As the mercury hovered on freezing, the chilly morning gave way to a blustery day across the Mid North Coast.
Port Macquarie's Katrina Begg packed up the family at 4am for the journey south of Gloucester. Barrington Tops delivered the goods on their arrival at 7am and by lunch time, the popular snow spot was jam-packed with visitors.
"When we were leaving the traffic heading up was crazy," Katrina said.
A steady stream of mud-covered 4WDs paraded into Gloucester just after midday on Sunday (August 23) after the Hunter Valley Police District made the call to close Barrington Forest Road due to dangerous conditions.
Prior to the road closure, the police had made several trips to the tops to assist people who had been stuck in the icy conditions.
The frosty mornings are expected to continue through most of the week, with maximums well within the single digits for the coming seven days, but the mostly dry conditions were unlikely to produce heavy snowfall at the Tops.
In Port Macquarie, the mornings will remain fresh with day time temperatures to rise into the mid-20s by the weekend.
Winds are expected to ease through the week giving way to the chance of a light shower next week.
