Port Macquarie-Hastings Council plans gratitude events without the fireworks fanfare to mark end of 2020

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is discussing options that will allow the community to celebrate the year's end while also adhering to COVID restrictions around mass gatherings and social distancing.

Of the Commonwealth Bushfire Disaster Recovery Fund allocation to council earlier this year, $60,000 was allocated for a community celebration for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and volunteers. Initial planning commenced for the event before it was put on hold as a result of COVID-19 lockdown.

Given the on-going uncertainty around restrictions and inability to hold a mass gathering event, the thank you celebration and the annual Countdown to Christmas street parade and Town Green concert, fireworks and tree lighting have been reconsidered.

In a report to council director of strategy and growth Liesa Davies said many councils have cancelled their winter and spring community events or switched them to online, with Christmas expected to be the next to follow.

"It has been an extremely difficult period for our community, with drought, bushfires and COVID and continuing on from the original bushfire recovery event plan, we are keen to ensure there is a way to celebrate and express thanks for all who have supported our community during this period," Ms Davies said.

Ms Davies says gratitude builds emotional resilience; provides both the giver and the receiver with a sense of well-being; helps council maintain a positive relationship with the community; and creates a sense of purpose for volunteers and community groups.

Some of the ideas for the celebration include a gratitude mural in prominent public spaces and fire-affected communities; gratitude chalkboard walls; and a virtual Christmas celebration to be streamed online.

In December 2019 in the wake of bushfires, council resolved not to hold its new year's eve fireworks display. Given the financial hardships resulting from COVID-19 and the provision of sponsorship, council has resolved not to proceed with fireworks or a laser light show this year.
