The station manager for NSW Ambulance Port Macquarie says the statistics on falls for people over the age of 65 are concerning.
Jamie Martin estimates about 60 per cent of call outs in the Port Macquarie-Hastings are in relation to elderly people who have injured themselves after falling over.
In NSW, falls involving the elderly is the number one prompt for triple zero calls.
"That's been the case for quite a number of years now," Mr Martin said.
"If you consider Port Macquarie being a retirement place, it would be even higher than the normal statistics for NSW.
"It is a huge part of our work."
Mr Martin said it's not normal for people to fall, even though there's a general belief falls go hand in hand with getting older.
"It's normal for a toddler to fall but once we learn how to walk, we're not suppose to be falling," he said.
The causes behind elderly falls can include underlining health conditions, according to Mr Martin.
"If the elderly are falling they need to be talking to their doctor," he said.
Unfortunately falls can have a wide range of impacts on the elderly and can impact their mobility, independence and confidence.
People who fall can have ongoing health issues relating to the incident.
Falls and resulting injuries can be linked to a higher death rate risk.
Mr Martin said people may not be aware that over one third of people aged over 65 in NSW have been in a fall incident.
"Once we get to the age group of over 80, half have had a fall incident."
Mr Martin said people are more prone to falls if they take four or more different medications.
Paramedics are specifically trained to carry out the appropriate assessments and help those who have fallen.
Mr Martin's tips to prevent falls:
- Speak to a general practitioner and enquire about falls clinics
- Maintain an exercise program to improve and increase balance
- Wear correct and stable shoes, which are laced up and have support
- Get regular eye checks
- Reduce clutter within the home, including moving rugs and electric cords
- Maintain a healthy diet (with calcium) and exercise outdoors for vitamin D
