Work has started to resurface sections of Jindalee Road, from the Lake Road roundabout to Geebung Drive, followed by Belah Road.
The project is going ahead at night.
PRO-SEW owner Adam Brown said a lot of money would flow from the Jindalee Road area, which was a fairly large business hub.
"I think it is good they are focusing on this area," he said.
The project is part of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's four-year road rehabilitation and resurfacing program.
Mr Brown said Jindalee Road was pitted and rough with a lot of patch-up work.
He is pleased the roadwork is happening at night.
"It empties out pretty much after 5pm," Mr Brown said.
"Obviously that [night work] is an intelligent way to do it in an area like this.
"It has to happen that way in busy areas and Jindalee Road is probably one of the busiest roads in Port."
Think Safety owner Andrew Black doesn't believe the condition of Jindalee Road is too bad but he welcomes the resurfacing project.
He said a smooth surface would make it a lot quieter in terms of road noise from empty trucks.
Belah Road, which runs between Jindalee Road and Blackbutt Road, will be resurfaced as well.
"Belah Road has got to be the roughest road in the industrial area - it is patches on patches," Mr Black said.
Katrina Sharp from Mid Coast Gaming and Hennessy Coffee on the Coast said Jindalee Road had been in poor condition for many years.
"For a little bit of inconvenience, it will make for a smoother drive," she said.
"It is probably about time it was resurfaced but there's a lot of other places that could do with a bit of attention."
The resurfacing work is expected to take three weeks if all goes to plan.
