Port Macquarie couple Megan Adams and Dana Brestel have an eight-month-old daughter Madeline and they chose to start using cloth nappies from when she was four months.

While the couple admit they were hesitant to dive into the cloth nappy scene, they now say the experience is superior than the one they had using disposables.

Ms Adams said the biggest hurdles they came across included poop being in the washing machine and the initial upfront costs with purchasing cloth nappies.

However, after connecting with other women through a mother's group Ms Adams became more comfortable with using cloth due to the support they offered.

She was also shocked by the statistics which showed how long it takes disposable nappies to break down in landfill.

Mr Brestel was won over by the use of cloth nappies after he saw a big difference in how Maddy's diaper rash improved.

"You want your child to be comfortable and happy," he said.

After the couple started using the cloth and had established a solid washing routine they found it was a lot easier than they expected.

"We had no issues with the transition," Ms Adams said.

"I would like to help other people find solutions for them because different nappies fit babies differently."

While cloth nappies do cost a lot of money upfront, long term they offer a cheaper option than disposables.

"(We are saving) thousands of dollars," Ms Adams said.

The family initially purchased cloth nappies second hand online and sanitised them before use.

"All up we've probably spent $250 to $300 on ours," she said.

"Definitely the lower end of what you can pay."

Mr Brestel said modern cloth nappies have come a long way since they were first established.

They have very absorbent material, are adjustable for sizing and come with waterproof shells.

Friederike Crowe is mum to Oliver who was born in April.

She also recently made the switch to cloth nappies and said it's been a lot easier than she thought.

Mrs Crowe said her supportive mother's group made the transition to cloth nappies a lot smoother.
