Commercial fishing wharf unveiled at Laurieton

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the $428,000 improvement project was funded by the NSW Government under its Coastal Infrastructure Program.

"Congratulations to GPM Marine Constructions which has delivered this project for Laurieton despite the challenges faced during COVID-19," Mrs Williams said.

"This maritime infrastructure is a welcome boost for the area and will benefit both commercial fishers as well as the general community.

"The project involved the removal of an old wooden wharf in Mill Street which had reached the end of its life and construction of a new mixed-use wharf facility that includes a vessel unloading area and a separate public dining area.

"Work was also done to strengthen the revetment bank with extra boulders to protect against erosion and some landscaping and pavement work.

"The new mixed-use facility will provide local commercial fishers with a safe and easily navigable facility to load and unload their vessels and catches.

"It will also provide a new location for scenic dining alongside the Camden Haven River for both local residents and tourists. This will help boost business for the Fisherman's Co-operative which leases the waterfront location."

The mixed-use wharf is about 67 square metres in size with the new unloading wharf slightly larger than its predecessor at 21 square metres and the public dining space about 46 square metres in size.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the improved Crown Land infrastructure was good news for Laurieton.

"This investment under the Coastal Infrastructure Program will support local business and recreation as well as tourism."
