I have such fond memories of my time in Port Macquarie and dream of returning one day.

I feel a strong connection with the region but the name of the town causes me much consternation.
Lachlan Macquarie, after whom so much in our State is named, was responsible for horrendous crimes against our indigenous brothers.
He ordered the massacre of women and children.
Instead (or in addition to?) removing the statue of Edmond Barton, could consideration not be given to changing the name of the town itself to one that reflects its beauty, indigenous history and future as a peaceful, respectful regional centre?
Countries have changed names, huge cities have changed names, I am sure a progressive place such as Port could lead in this way too.
