Works are underway on the playground upgrade at the skate park end of the beach which has been given a financial boost by way of a $200,000 grant from the state government's Everyone Can Play initiative.
It will be matched dollar for dollar by council with a further $215,000 for the project allocated in the 2019-20 operational plan budget.
The total project costs is $615,000.
"Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was one of 30 successful councils to benefit from the latest round of funding from the Everyone Can Play initiative that helps create inclusive playgrounds across NSW," Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said.
"The funding will help deliver an inclusive playground at Town Beach.
"While our playgrounds are closed at the moment to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect our community, it'll be important that everyone will get a chance to play once they re-open."
Upgrades to the playground are now underway and in addition to water play, families can look forward to a scooter pump track, tower with tunnel slide, accessible spinner, picnic shelter and shade sails. The popular Liberty Swing will continue to be enjoyed by those with a disability, mayor Peta Pinson said.
"We are so lucky to have so many wonderful playgrounds, parks, gardens and outdoor spaces to enjoy," Cr Pinson said.
"Town Beach and the playground area is one of our most popular destinations, and the contribution from the NSW government will see the addition of water play that is sure to be enjoyed by families of all ages and abilities."
The construction of the playground will be split into two stages.
Works have begun on stage one which includes a 150m2 asphalt scooter pump track and a connecting 1.8m wide concrete pedestrian footpath.
The scooter pump track is being constructed by Dirt Art, a specialist mountain bike consultant. Stage 1 is scheduled for completion by May 11.
Stage two includes installation of new playground equipment and associated landscaping and is scheduled for an August start.
