Wombats were unsteady early in the match with most of the play going in the Cougars favour. The game ran into extra time when both teams found themselves with level scores at the Regional Stadium on Friday, March 13.
Ferocity of both teams was intense befitting the final match of the annual Police Bank Cup rugby league carnival in Port Macquarie. Wombats looked to take advantage of leg speed tactics against the bigger body power of the Cougars.
Corrections made the most of a kick at goal in the 16th minute of the second half to secure a lead of two points to zero.
Easts responded in the last five minutes of the second half to level the scores from a field kick, two-two.
The Wombats looked like they would finish off the match with another field kick in the first five minutes of extra time. However the Golden Point opportunity went begging with the shot sent careering past the far right side of the goal.
Both teams withstood almost ten minutes of extra time before Adam Micallef intercepted a pass for the Wombats with 27 seconds to go. He ran the field to win the match, six-two.
Carnival organiser Stephen McDonald said it was a fitting end for the week long tournament featuring eight teams from across the state.
"Great game, an excellent game between two very close teams," he said after the final siren.
"There were missed opportunities by both teams and the lucky intercept there to the Wombats to win the game for them.
"There are some talented players out there and for these teams in the grand final it's their fifth game of the week.
"Crowd is a little bit down but many of the teams eliminated have headed back to where they live. It's all live streamed and there are some good viewing numbers there."
