Mayor Peta Pinson, Birpai elder Uncle Bill O'Brien and Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan welcomed 40 adults and 12 children as new citizens.
During the ceremony candidates pledged their allegiance to Australia and celebrated the final important step for those migrating Australia.
New citizens were originally from a variety of countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, China, Netherlands, New Zealand and France.
There were also new citizens from Germany, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Romania, Philippines, Britain, Italy, South Africa, Argentina and United States of America.
New citizen Melanie Hay, who was previously a citizen of the United Kingdom, said she'd been living in Australia for 40 years.
"I came over with my family originally as a young girl," she said.
"I've been meaning to do it for a long time but life just gets in the way. The last few years I decided it was something I really wanted to do and give back to the community.
"I've made a life here and it's been terrific."
New Australian citizen Carol Jain was joined by her brother, Kevin Gomes who flew from Bangladesh to witness the ceremony.
