A stop-start season has seen Gary Humphreys' men complete only six games since their October start due to a combination of different weather conditions - from smoke to rain - it's had it all.
They are headed for the finals, but where they finish will depend on the result of the weekend clash at Andrews Park.
"It's only the positions that are up for grabs but we're definitely in the finals," Humphreys said.
"We made it last year so this consolidates the good performances at the start of the year and while we've only played six games we have had some good performances."
Despite only playing a third of their matches, fielding a youthful side has come with advantages for the club.
"Half of our games have either been wash-outs or smoke, but having a young side means a lot of our juniors have played rep cricket during the week," the coach said.
"It's been one of those seasons ... very frustrating."
While Wauchope are out of finals contention, Humphreys said Pirates are still wary of a side which features Nathan Lyon at the top of the batting order along with Matt Miller with the new ball.
"Nathan is always one of the dangers because if he gets away he can make things very difficult," he said.
"But we will have a full bowling attack which I think is one of the strongest in the competition and we have good variety."
Asked whether Pirates had met their expectations they set at the start of the season, Humphreys felt they had.
"The big thing for us was to have fun and we've achieved that," he said.
"The other one was to make the finals which we've also done, but once the finals start it's a different game."
